Biofouling: A Massive & Costly Worldwide Problem
Biofouling is the accumulation of microorganisms, algae, and animals such as barnacles on boats and other submerged surfaces.
Bottom paint alone does not stop fouling and will eventually be prohibited by the DEP and EPA because of its toxic chemicals that pollute our waterways. It can decrease boat resale value by ~15%.
The Florida Clean Marina Program is encouraging banning diver cleanings due to scraped paint killing organisms on the seafloor.
A heavily fouled boat suffers up to an 85% decrease in speed and fuel efficiency according to study by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Current solutions include bottom painting, diver cleaning, and drydocking that are not sufficient.
